In the past I've always worked on a two inch mesh board, that's to say a 3'6" net would be 21 meshes long i.e. 21 by 2 equals the forty two inches of a 3'6" net. (3'6" is the usual size I tie) But I've noticed that a lot ,seemingly, of people now tie with a two and a quarter inch mesh board giving eighteen meshes on a 3'6" net. In fact Agouti sells 21/4" mesh boards for making rabbit nets) Obviously it's going to be quicker to tie a net with a larger mesh board but are people happy with this mesh size? Does anyone have any trouble i.e. rabbits escaping?etc. Am I just old fashioned/out of touch ?

perfectly happy with 21/4" mesh, cant recall ever losing an adult rabbit from the size mesh and as I dispatch in the net its far easier to have the head through the mesh

I too used a 2" mesh board for about 40 years, about 10 years ago I was given a 2.1/8th mesh board to try. I made a couple of long nets with it and have never gone back to the 2" board. The thing to remember is that unlike nylon, spun polyester does not stretch where a 4" nylon mesh would stretch to allow a rabbit to get it's head though, a similar size polyester net would not. Polyester is similar to the old hemp in some ways, in that it does not stretch and even larger sized meshes can still hold rabbits.

Hi Tony, yes the meshboard would be measured across the face top to bottom, I generally make mine from Formica(its a laminate)and requires 2 sides glued together to balance the twist out of it. It can be glued to a board but as you say that will increase the thickness of the board and then the finished mesh would be increased

Apologies Tony I deleted your post by mistake when going to delete the double post by leeview.
To answer your post though, you are quite correct it is the total circumference of the board that should be taken into consideration when measuring a mesh size. I use aluminium sheet mesh boards 1.5mm thick. To be honest most mesh sizes are nominal anyway.
Apologies once again.

No problem AJ. I just brought up the point that the thickness of the mesh board should be considered. I had a student net maker who used a board 1/4" wide. The thickness of the board would be especially critical in small mesh work as in this minnow trap
